About Fezile Dabi District Municipality 

Name change for District Municipality

The name of the former Northern Free State District Municipality has officially been changed on the 03 May 2005 and will in future be known as Fezile Dabi District Municipality.The District Municipality followed the trend in the country and applied for the name in terms of Section 12 Notice (2000). The Executive Mayor of Fezile Dabi embarked on a public consultation process during August and September 2004. All communities falling within the jurisdiction of the District Municipality were consulted where 96% of residents voted in favour of the new name.

The new name was submitted to the South African Names Board for registration and to the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Local Government and Housing in the Free State, who then published a notice of intention to change the name for comments.A period for comments from the public sector allowed objections and inputs and after no objections were received, the name change was published in the Government Gazette.

Who is Fezile Dabi?

Mr. Fezile Dabi was an ANC leader who lived in Tumahole, Parys. He was also an author, poet, philosopher, mentor, husband and father, who passionately fought for freedom during the struggle. He is remembered today not only for what he believed in but is also widely known for philosophic words. He is still insipring people today with a poem he wrote and which was printed on his funeral letter.

The logo captures and depicts the characteristics of the inter-dependant relationships between the government, its community, natural resources and the key economic drivers of the Fezile Dabi District.

The slogan is “Aiming above the horizon”.

Fezile Dabi District Municipality aims to do more than the average organisation in terms of service delivery, bringing governance to the people, protecting the environment and all other fields of good governance, thus “Aiming above the horizon” is a fitting slogan.
