South African Survey 2009/2010
Key findings of living condition indicators reported in the 2009/2010 South African Survey regarding the Fezile Dabi district include the following;
- Total number of households are estimated at 147 364.
- The types of housing in the district comprise of 66.1 % formal housing, 16.3 % informal dwellings and 1.1 % traditional dwellings. Tenure status comprised of 46.4 % in the category “owned and fully paid off”, 9.4 % in the category “owned but not yet fully paid off”, 31 % in the category “rented”, 12.8 % in the category “occupied rent free” and 0.4 % falls in the category “other”.
- 97.1 % of households have access to piped water. 5.7 % of households still use the bucket system and 91.4 % of households have access to electricity.
- 72 % of households have access to postal services. 69.4 % of households have access to cellular phones whilst 74.5 % have access to radio and 63.4 % to television.
2007 Community Survey, Statistics South Africa
Key findings of the 2007 Community Survey of Statistics South Africa regarding Fezile Dabi include the following;
- 61 % of the main dwellings of households comprised of a house or a brick structure on a separate stand or yard.
- The percentage of traditional dwellings made of traditional materials decreased from 3.2 % (Census 2001) to 1.1 %.
- The percentage of households comprising of a house/flat in a backyard increased from 6 % to 6.5 %. Informal dwellings in an informal settlement, however, decreased from 18.5 % (Census 2001) to 9.8 %.
- 46.4 % of households have access to piped water inside the dwelling which is a significant increase from the 29.3 % indicated in the 2001 Census. A further 46.1 % of households have access to piped water inside the yard. The percentage of households with access to water outside the yard decreased from 14.2 % (2001 Census) to 4.7 %.
- 83 % of households have access to flush toilets connected to sewerage system which increased from 61 % in the 2001 Census. The percentage of households using the bucket system decreased from 16.5 % in the 2001 Census to 4.4 %.
- The percentage of households using electricity for cooking increased from 51.2 % (Census 2001) to 85.9 % whilst 91.4 % of households use electricity for lighting. 69.7 % of households also used electricity for heating.
- 89.5 % of households have access to refuse removal by the municipality at least once a week which increased from 64.3 % in the 2001 Census.
